About

What is the role of a Cannabis Nurse?

Cannabis nursing is both a learned skill and a practiced art, where the cannabis nurse builds expertise upon previous experiences with healing and nursing while enacting reflective practices to support growth toward expertise.

Cannabis nursing requires that the nurse be educated in multiple areas above and beyond all registered nurse competencies, including knowledge of:

• The endocannabinoid system

• Cannabis therapeutics

• Cannabinoids

• Terpenoids

• Cannabis laboratory testing requirements

• Potential medication interactions

• Advocacy

• Addictions

• Ethics

• Law

Moreover, the cannabis nurse’s role expands as he or she acts as an advocate, coach, and navigator to guide patients through a sea of cannabis information and misinformation.

Not everyone who uses, or is considering using medical marijuana, is a candidate for a medical marijuana card, even if you have an approved diagnosis.  And everyone who uses medical marijuana needs to be aware of its effects and contraindications. A cannabis nurse takes a full health history, reviews current treatments the individual is using and their effectiveness, reviews medical records, initiates evidence-based testing to determine cannabis use and treatment, and presents a summary of the findings and treatment plan.

If you live in a state where medical marijuana use has been legalized, you might assume that your health insurance will pay for it like other drugs prescribed by your physician, as well as pay for you prescriber or cannabis nurse appointments. However, you’d be wrong; health insurance won’t pay for medical marijuana or appointments around medical marijuana, even in states where its use has been legalized. In states that have legalized its use, physicians recommend medical marijuana rather than prescribe it, this is mainly due to its federal classification as a schedule I drug, and not being FDA approved.

This means all medical costs around medical marijuana are self-pay.

Whether you are looking for a health advocate to bridge the gap between your medical provider and your cannabis requests and treatment use, need an energy reset, have questions regarding cannabinoid therapies, or are in need of guidance for a loved one in in the use of medical marijuana, the Cannabis Nurse at Saint Kaneh-Bosem Consulting is here to help!
